The Bloodtwig Dogwood, scientifically known as Cornus sanguinea, is a deciduous shrub admired for its striking red stems, which provide vibrant winter interest. In spring, it produces small white flowers and later, small black fruit. This dogwood is excellent for adding color and structure to the winter garden and is often used in hedges or naturalized areas.
Bloodtwig Dogwood prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Regular watering is essential, particularly during dry spells, to maintain soil moisture. Pruning can be done to shape the plant and remove any damaged or crowded branches. This dogwood variety is known for its distinctive red branches and adds vibrant color to the garden, especially in winter. It works well in mixed borders, naturalized areas, or as a focal point. Proper spacing allows for good air circulation. Adequate mulching helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. It is relatively low-maintenance.
