Summersweet, scientifically known as Clethra alnifolia, is a deciduous shrub appreciated for its fragrant, bottlebrush-like spikes of white or pink flowers that bloom in mid to late summer. This native plant is a pollinator favorite and thrives in damp, shaded areas, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens, rain gardens, or naturalized landscapes. It also offers attractive fall foliage color.

Care Guide

Summersweet thrives in partial to full shade and well-drained, consistently moist soil. Regular watering is essential to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. This deciduous shrub is valued for its fragrant summer blooms and attractive fall foliage. It is an excellent choice for shaded gardens, woodland settings, or as a foundation plant. Proper mulching can help retain moisture and keep the roots cool. Pruning can be done in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and remove dead wood. Adequate spacing allows for good air circulation.
